Pakistan and Afghanistan Agree End Terrorism

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan and Afghanistan have reached a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending cross-border terrorism and restoring peace in the region, confirmed Defense Minister Khawaja Asif in an interview with Al Jazeera Arabia.

Khawaja Asif credited Qatar and Türkiye for their crucial role in brokering the deal, expressing appreciation for the Emir of Qatar, the Turkish President, and the Turkish delegation. He emphasized that the agreement’s central goal is to eliminate terrorism that has long destabilized the border areas of both nations.

The defense minister acknowledged that tensions between Islamabad and Kabul had escalated into direct clashes in recent weeks. However, both sides now agree that immediate action is needed to address the threat of terrorism and work towards long-term stability.

He confirmed that the next round of talks to finalize the terms of the ceasefire will take place in Istanbul next week.

According to Khawaja Asif, the Afghan defense leadership has also recognized terrorism as the core issue and pledged to take practical steps to resolve it. A joint mechanism is being developed to address ongoing concerns and improve communication.

The ceasefire deal, mediated by Qatar and Türkiye, carries weight due to the involvement of neutral and respected international actors, the minister noted.

Khawaja Asif added that Pakistan has endured heavy human and economic losses due to terrorism, but the new agreement may pave the way for improved bilateral ties, trade, and transit. He said Afghanistan will once again have access to Pakistani ports for trade activities.

Regarding Afghan nationals in Pakistan, the minister clarified that those with valid documents will be allowed to stay, while individuals without legal status will continue to be repatriated.

He also underlined the need for a regulated and secure border, similar to international norms.

While hopeful about the agreement’s potential, Khawaja Asif maintained that its success will depend on implementation in the coming weeks and months.
